I am taking a friend for a colon cancer test. I am afraid I will not know how to comfort her if the diagnosis comes back that it is cancer. Neither of us is very spiritual, so I can't say anything about God helping her through this. Is there something comforting that I can say to her if she gets any bad news after the test?

While a cancer diagnosis is no longer a death sentence, the word "cancer" is very frightening. But there are now so many new therapies and medications available for positive outcomes. If your friend is diagnosed with cancer, you can hug her and say "Let's find out all the options." She will be shocked and it may take a few days to absorb the news. At that point you can say "I know this is frightening but there are so many things they can do" or "I'll be with you to help you through this - you're a fighter and you're going to win this." You can ask your friend what she would like you to do but most important, just be her friend.
