Sometimes the best thing you can do to comfort
is to listen. Pay close attention to the speaker and be responsive.
Ask someone, “What can I do to help?” or “What
can I do for you?” But only ask if you are willing to do whatever they
ask. Rest assured, what they ask you to do is the help they need most.
If you are not willing to do just anything,
offer something specific that you would like to do. Ask, “Can I make
you a pot of chicken soup?” or “Can I run some errands for you? I am
free Wednesday morning.”
