No holiday from grief

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in yourself during the holidays. While the baking, the cooking, and shopping are fun, they take a toll on your energy and time. And it’s easy to lose ourselves in the warmth and memories of past holidays. Friends and loves ones dealing with loss don’t have that luxury. Whether they’ve lost a loved one, their health, a job, a friend' or their marriage, it’s even harder feeling sad when everyone else seems so hearty.

So what can you do?

It’s not material gifts that are meaningful, it’s thoughtful contact. Make a call, send a card, set aside some time for a walk or coffee, or invite them to an outing. And when you’re with them, take the time to listen. Attentive listening goes a long way in making someone feel they matter.

While your hours might be in short supply, make the time to connect. As the giver, you’ll feel as good as the receiver. Isn’t that what holidays are all about anyway?
